 Can I use a PS5 controller on PS4?

Many PS4 players own a PS5 controller and are eager to use it for their gaming sessions.

But is it really possible to use a PS5 controller on a PlayStation 4?  The answer is bittersweet, because at first glance it is not, but with one big exception.

We are playing on our beloved PS4 and suddenly the console crashes or we just want to play with a friend and we have a PS5 console.  Is it possible to use the PS5 console on PS4?  Although the first answer is "no," there is one big exception that we'll explain in more detail below.

PS5 controllers do not work on PlayStation 4

We can use DualShock 4 on PS5 to enjoy different PS4 games, but we can't use PS5 controller on PS4.  It is possible to pair the DualSense controller with your PS4 via Bluetooth;  But Sony did it so that the PS5 console wouldn't register any inputs.

If we review the Sony FAQ, we can see that it shows "DualSense wireless controller is not compatible with PS4 controller".

Sony designed the PS5 console exclusively for the console, as it has various features that are unique to console games.  So it makes perfect sense in the world that the company decided to move out of the PS4 era by forcing players to switch to the new console to use DualSense.

  RemotePlay alternative

However, there is a significant exception, which is precisely the one we were talking about at the beginning of this article.  It is possible to use a PS5 controller to play PS4 games, but for this we will have to use Remote Play, which is a way to transfer PS4 games to another device.

If we connect the PS4 to a device with a DualSense controller connected, either via Bluetooth or USB, to a Windows PC, iPhone, Android, or Apple TV;  Then we can use DualSense to play PS4 games.

It is clearly not the ideal "solution", but in fact there is no other solution.  Sony is focusing on its new console which makes perfect sense.  The PlayStation 4 has already completed its cycle, it has its own controls and it is not necessary for any new generation of peripherals to work on the previous console.
