What is BESS Battery Energy Storage System

BESSs are widely located all over the world, including the United States, United Kingdom, Japan, China, Australia, and other countries.

In this article, we will explain in a simple way what BESS is, about battery storage technology and how it works.

Cost reduction, flexibility, resource saving, environmental efficiency, smart energy consumption;  Actually these are some of the benefits that we can find with an energy storage system, but what is BESS?  This is what we will answer next.

What is BESS and how does it work?

A BESS is an Energy Storage System (ESS) that captures energy from various sources;  It saves that energy and stores it in rechargeable batteries for future use.  If necessary, electrochemical energy is discharged from the battery and supplied to homes, vehicles, industrial facilities and enterprises.

So what is BESS?  A complex system, containing both high-level and low-level software and hardware components.  The basic parts of BESS have:

battery system  It contains individual battery cells capable of converting chemical energy into electrical energy.  The said cells are arranged into modules which in turn form battery packs.

Battery Management System (BMS)  In this case, the BMS becomes the integrity of the battery system.  It is responsible for supervising the state of the cells of this, and controls their parameters and states;  State of Charge (SOC) and State of Health (SOH), in turn protecting batteries from fire and other hazards.

Power conversion system (PCS)  What this does is convert the direct current (DC) produced by the batteries into alternating current (AC).  These systems contain two-way transducers that provide loading and unloading.

Energy management system (EMS)  It is responsible for monitoring and managing the flow of energy present in the battery storage system.  EMS is the person who organizes the work of BMS, PCS and various components of BESS.  By collecting and analyzing energy data, the EMS is able to manage all the energy resources of the system very efficiently.

  Intelligent Energy Consumption

It can also include various safety systems: fire control, smoke detector, temperature control, refrigeration, heating, ventilation and air conditioning.  However, this may vary depending on the functionality and operating conditions of BESS.

Security systems have their own monitoring and control units;  which provide ideal conditions for BESS to operate optimally according to its standards and respond to emergencies.

It is also based on powerful software solutions.  For example, modern systems make use of machine learning algorithms to save energy in this way.  To estimate battery states and properties with high accuracy, reliable algorithms and mathematical models built into the BMS software are necessary.

In short, BESS is responsible for providing energy from an electrical grid or renewable energy sources.  In this way, it is stored using battery storage technology.  Therefore, batteries discharge and discharge that energy when they have to, during peak demand, blackouts, and other situations.
