How to combine masks in Lightroom Classic?

Lightroom Classic, Adobe's popular software, features one of its recent improvements: the ability to combine different masking modes to achieve highly selective adjustment areas.

It is a tool that takes 100% of the capabilities of artificial intelligence to allow us to define regions within regions, and is more accurate when applying adjustments

Lightroom is not only one of those photo editing apps on iOS and Android that you should try, but it's also a program that we can make use of, and a lot more, on our PC.  Some users make small adjustments to it before switching to Photoshop.  If this is your case, and you want to give your photo a special touch, discover how to combine masks in Lightroom Classic to reduce the area you're working on.

The fact is that only a few weeks ago we could make more use of Adobe Lightroom Classic thanks to a series of novelties presented by its developers, mainly related to the possibility of combining different masking modes to achieve highly selective adjustment areas.

  Lightroom mask improvements

As we said before, a major update to Lightroom Classic introduced in the last quarter of 2021 brought new masking tools to one of the leading photo editors.

In this way, although previous solutions in the forms of Adobe applications were not bad, they now use artificial intelligence to determine themes.  However, today we are interested in the intersection as a solution.

What is the advantage of these new functions introduced by the developers of the company?  Basically, the most important feature is that you can combine different types of masks to reduce the working space.

To give you an idea of how to use it, consider for example selecting that object first in the image you want to apply some changes to, and then in an area within that selected object first.  For example, focus first on the person in the picture, and then on his hat.

So how do I combine masks in Lightroom Classic?

Well, we know that interpreting things is still a bit complicated, which is why we are going to use a specialist for this matter.  This is photographer Brian Matias, author of the video tutorial you have here above.

There, you can learn how to perform the procedure to work directly on his jacket in the photo.  Using the mask and AI, it selects itself first, then crosses the second mask, leaving only the area of the image that corresponds to the highlighted jacket.

Of course, if the fit is not perfect, you can brush up on the result a little to improve it and make it perfect.

The intersection of the masks is simple.  You can simply create a new mask, click on the three dots icon to the right of the mask name, then click "Intersection of mask with" and we can say Done.  In Lightroom Classic, you will be shown a list of skin types that you can combine your current skin with.

From there, you can get quite creative with Lightroom masking combinations.

Other things to take into consideration

To narrow the selection further, you can turn on the mask overlay and use the Refine slider with some masks, like the Gradient Mask, which should come in quite handy.  To see exactly which areas of an image are hidden, hold down the Option key on a Mac or the Alt key on Windows, then drag the slider.  You will see it white on a black background.
