How do I recover my Gmail account if I don't have access

Obviously, losing access to a Google account can be a completely negative experience, especially if you have everything associated with it: files in Drive, Android, Chrome, YouTube, etc.  Since we know how frustrating it can be, we decided to make this tutorial for you to learn how to recover a Gmail account if we don't have access.

The only thing we can say is that it is better to be prepared in advance, that way we make sure that no matter what happens, we never lose our account.  However, we will see all the ways we must be able to recover the Gmail account.

  Create a backup frequently

Before we talk in detail about how to recover a Gmail account, we are forced to recommend making a backup to avoid losing important data in case that account cannot be recovered.  Google allows us to download all data from Takeout.

Keep a record of your old password

One way Google can verify our identity if we lose our password is by asking us to enter our old password.  Obviously, if it's been a long time since we changed the password, it can be hard to remember what it was.  So it is better to keep track of your passwords.

For this we can use a password manager so that we can backup all our current and old passwords.

Provide Google with all the recovery information beforehand

A good idea is to provide Google with recovery information beforehand.  This way, if on any occasion we have to verify our identity, we can do so quickly and easily.

The first thing we have to do is go to the Google settings page and we will click where the word “Security” appears in the left sidebar.

On this new page we will have to scroll down and we will see a section that says “Ways to verify your identity”.

Here we will see if we have configured the recovery phone number or recovery email address.

In the event that you have not completed any of these steps, it is best to do so.

Set up a recovery email account

Your recovery email account can be another Gmail account.  It could be an alternate account or the account of a friend or family member that we trust a lot.

For this, we will go to the “Methods to verify your identity” section from the “Security” option and we will click on “Recover Email”.

We will have to type in the email address of our choice for recovery and we will press Verify.

Google will then send a six-digit verification code to the email address we entered.  We will have to go to this email, copy the code and paste it on the recovery page.

How to set up a recovery phone number

Again we will have to go to the option “Ways to verify your identity” in the “Security” section and click on “Recovery phone”.

We must enter the phone number in the pop-up box and Google will send us a text message or SMS with a verification code that we must enter on the page.

What happens if we lose the password and can't get in in any way?  We can use the Gmail recovery page and answer some questions.

The problem is that the options are a bit limited.  We had the opportunity to test this method on my test account and they asked us for things like the last password, verification code for alternate email and phone, and the answer to a security question.

When we comment that we don't have any of those or just some, it sends us a message telling us we should try again.  It is not the best system for Gmail account recovery.  Even if we enter all the data that the bots request from Google, it may not be enough.
