Windows 10 Fix "Tablet Not Available" mode

Tablet mode is a feature of Windows 10 that, as the name suggests, is intended for use on touchscreen computers and tablets.  However, even if you don't have a Windows 10 tablet or touch screen, you can still turn on tablet mode.

Action Center has an option for a quick toggle and there is a setting for it in the Settings app.  If tablet mode is not available on your Windows 10 PC, there are two very quick solutions for it.  This is what you can do.

  Windows 10

There are two things you can do to enable Tablet Mode when the switch is disabled.

  Remove external displays

Tablet mode is available for Windows 10 devices with one exception;  You must not have an external monitor connected to the system.  You can understand that this excludes all Windows 10 desktop systems.

However, if you have a laptop, regardless of whether it has a touch screen or not, you can use the tablet mode.  Remove any external displays you have and the tablet mode switch will be active in Action Center.

  Registry Editor

There is another method you can use to force Tablet Mode to turn on when it refuses to turn on.  This method requires editing the Windows registry.

Use Windows Search to find the Registry Editor, or open the Run box with the keyboard shortcut Win + R. In the Run box, type regedit and hit the Enter key.

Once the Registry Editor is open, navigate to the following location

  HKEY_CURRENT_USERSOFTWAREM MicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionImmersiveShell

Here, look for a value called TabletMode in the ImmersiveShell.  If it doesn't exist, you can create it yourself.  Right-click on ImmersiveShell and select New > REG_DWORD from the context menu.  After creating the value, double-click on it and enter 1 in the Value data box.

  Windows 10

Next, you need to restart File Explorer.  Open Task Manager, and in the Processes tab, find Windows Explorer.  Select it and click the Restart button at the bottom.  When you return the desktop wallpaper, tablet mode should work on your system.  The switch center will be running.

  Tablet mode settings

Tablet mode provides an alternative desktop that combines the Start menu and desktop into one desktop.  It's a lot like the disastrous Start menu that popped up with Windows 8, so if you see it, don't panic.  Just disable tablet mode and you'll get your old desktop back.
