  Files can be compressed into a variety of formats;  The most common are ZIP and RAR.  But there are many unknown compression formats and we may encounter them from time to time.  That is why today we will see how to open TGZ files in Windows.

  TGZ files on Windows

  It is very common to find TGZ files primarily on Linux, and very strange to find one on Windows.  However, compression and extraction applications support TGZ files.  If we already have a tool like WinRAR installed on our computer, we must first check if it is able to extract the file.  In case this is not the case, we can try the following options.

  Compress TGZ files

  In case we want to compress the TGZ file, we can do it using the free 7zip app.  It is a two step process where we will have to compress the file twice.  It's obviously not the best solution, but thanks to the 7zip GUI we can do it relatively quickly.

  Compress tgz files into gzip.

      The first thing we need to do is open the file explorer.

      Next, we will right-click on the file or folder that we want to compress.

      We select 7zip in the contextual menu and go to the Add to file submenu.

      Now what we are going to do is open the file format dropdown menu and select TAR.

      We simply go ahead and compress the file.

      Once the compression is done, we will have to right click on the newly created TAR file.

      We will choose 7zip in the contextual menu and we will choose "Gzip" in the file format dropdown.

      Now we simply click on OK.

  The output file will be in Tar.gz format.  In this relatively simple way, we can compress our TGZ file without any kind of problem.

      We download and install 7zip.

      We will have to locate the TGZ file that we want to extract and right-click on it.

      We select 7zip in the contextual menu.

      Now we will choose "Extract" to "folder name. tar".

      Next, we will right-click on the TAR file and choose 7zip.

      We will choose "Extract" to "Folder Name".

      Next, we will open File Explorer and we will have to find the TGZ file that we want to extract.

      Next we will right-click on the TGZ file and select Extract WinRAR to Folder Name.
